THE DISH:
Bubur Cha Cha or Bobo Cha Cha is a sweet dessert that originated from Malaysia and Indonesia and is something that Singaporeans have come to savour and enjoy too! Bubur means porridge in Malay while Cha Cha (pronounced as Che Che in Hokkien) means prosperity or abundance. Due to its colourful appearance, it is generally prepared during festive seasons. It is also enjoyed by many on the last day (the 15th day) of Chinese New Year. Bubur Cha Cha is traditionally made with coconut milk, sweet potatoes and yam. However now in Singapore, you might also find colourful tapioca jellies in it as well! It is served hot or chilled but is delicious either way. I enjoy my Bubur Cha Cha cold and with the tapioca jelly as it gives a different texture to the dessert. The delicious Bubur Cha Cha featured is from #sweetheartdesserts and I stumbled (very luckily) upon it by chance some time back. While the sweet potatoes and yam are soft to the bite and still lovely to eat on their own, the tapioca jellies give that added chewiness that many of us love these days (Pearls in our bubble milk tea right?? 🧋)
